Project Description

Project Overview The Water Wells & Borehole Project is a humanitarian initiative of Zunairah Islamic Charity Organization Uganda (ZICO Uganda) dedicated to providing safe, clean, and reliable water to Muslim communities and other underserved populations facing water scarcity. Inspired by the Islamic teachings on compassion, charity (Sadaqah Jariyah), and the importance of providing water to those in need, this project seeks to improve health, dignity, and quality of life while strengthening community resilience. Many rural Muslim communities walk long distances to collect unsafe water from rivers, ponds, and swamps, exposing families to waterborne diseases and reducing the time available for education, worship, and productive work. Through this project, ZICO Uganda constructs boreholes, hand-dug wells, protected springs, solar-powered water systems, water storage facilities, and community water points to ensure sustainable access to clean water. Providing water is one of the greatest forms of continuous charity in Islam, as every person who drinks, performs ablution (Wudhu), cooks, cleans, or benefits from the water contributes to ongoing rewards for those who support the project. Project Goal To improve access to safe and sustainable clean water for Muslim communities and vulnerable populations through the construction and rehabilitation of water sources while promoting health, hygiene, and Islamic values of compassion and service. Project Objectives Construct new boreholes in water-scarce communities. Develop hand-dug and protected water wells. Rehabilitate non-functional boreholes and wells. Install solar-powered water pumping systems where appropriate. Construct water storage tanks and community water distribution points. Improve access to clean water for mosques, Madrasahs, orphanages, and health facilities. Support access to clean water for ablution (Wudhu) and sanitation. Promote hygiene and sanitation education within communities. Establish community water management committees for long-term sustainability.
